A Taylor County jury handed down a verdict of not guilty Wednesday night in the case of Justin Taylor, a Dyess airman who was accused of having sex with an unconscious woman after a party at his home in April 2010.

The verdict was given a little after 10 p.m., said Jason Trumpler, the attorney representing Taylor. The jury deliberated for nearly five hours before reaching its decision.

Taylor and his wife, Sarah, both testified in the three-day trial. Both maintained Justin Taylor's innocence. During the course of the trial, DNA evidence revealed that Taylor did have sex with the woman who accused him of rape. Taylor, however, said he would never have nonconsensual sex with anyone.

"In my opinion, the verdict was appropriate," Trumpler said.

He said the Abilene Police Department, which worked in conjunction with Dyess Air Force Base on the case, did not conduct a thorough investigation.
